Skwaat everyday for 90 days. Day 1.

So, as some of you may recall, assuming anyone is reading and also assuming I mentioned it previously, my goal for my 50th birthday at the end of the year, aside from looking as buff and being as fit as possible, is to do 50 squats with my own bodyweight on the bar. I think it is a Dan John benchmark. I think it may also be a Johnny Pain Villain challenge. Whatever, I needed to do something with a 50 in the number and a running 50km (or miles!) is no longer an option, this seemed like a good idea. At the time. Which was a few months ago when there was still loads of time inbetween.
So the other day it occurred to me that a.) there isn’t that much time left. 3 months, 1 week and 1 day, to be precise, and b.) I haven’t been doing any volume training at all. All my workouts are in the 4 to 6 rep range. I can squat considerably more than my own body weight for sets of 6. I can squat more than 1.5 times my body weght for a single. But 50 reps? I doubt I could squat 50 reps unbroken with just the bar. If there is one thing that I learned doing Crossfit, it is that endurance strength and power strength are two totally different things.
I still have just about 100 days left. Its not a disaster but I would rather start working towards that goal now rather than later. Having consulted some friends who are serious lifters whose opinions I trust, the unanimous response was: squat as often as possible at mixed volumes (thanks you Craig StClair of MegaFreak Fitness for putting it so concisely). So I am going to add some form of skwaats every day for the next 90 days to see how I get on. It seems a little daunting right now. I have only been squating once a week recently, but I guess I wont be going heavy all the time and there is nothing like doing something all the time to get good at it.

    That is an impressive goal, but why not! I’m a big fan of audacious targets. Although one of my goals for the year is to do 5 chin-ups in a row, which looks impossibly weedy next to your plan! Mind you, it’s a tough one for me, so since I’m in my 48th year maybe I’ll make it 4.8 chin-ups 🙂
